In the aftermath of the demise of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State on Wednesday, a notable exodus unfolded as at least five of his aides submitted their resignations. Governor Akeredolu, who battled prostate cancer, passed away in Germany while undergoing treatment.
With the emergence of Aiyedatiwa as the new governor, a faction of Akeredolu’s close associates chose to sever their ties. Notable among those who tendered their resignations were Richard Olatunde, Akeredolu’s Chief Press Secretary, and Dare Aragbaye, the ex-governor’s Special Adviser on Union Matters and Special Duties. The list also includes Aminu Raimi, Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands, and Housing; Olawale Abolade, Special Assistant on Photography; and Dr. Doyin Odebowale, Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties and Strategy.
This development underscores a reluctance among the departing aides to align with the new governor, citing their loyalty to Akeredolu as the primary reason for their resignations. The exodus sends a clear signal that the transition in leadership may face internal opposition.
In one resignation letter addressed to the office of the Secretary to the State Government, Aminu Raimi expressed that his decision to resign was dictated by his conscience. He stated, “This decision is anchored in my conscience, as my leader and dear boss, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, CON, joined the Saint Triumphant.”
Meanwhile, Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties and Strategy, Dr. Doyin Odebowale, emphasized the rarity of the privilege offered for service and promptly resigned.
Amid speculations of fear of victimization under the new governor, an ally of Aiyedatiwa suggested that more resignations might follow. The source mentioned, “They resigned out of fear of victimization, which I don’t believe the governor would have time to do. I would like to tell you that more are still going to resign.”
The political landscape also witnessed tensions during Aiyedatiwa’s acting governorship, marked by resistance from some cabinet members and an attempt by the state assembly to impeach him. Despite a public apology and a pledge of loyalty from Aiyedatiwa, dissent persisted, particularly from Akeredolu’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties and Strategy, Dr. Doyin Odebowale, who insisted on the impeachment of the then deputy governor.
In the ongoing transition, Aiyedatiwa has reportedly initiated the search for a deputy governor, exploring possibilities within the northern or central senatorial districts. Potential candidates include Chief Olugbenga Ale, Chief of Staff to the former governor, and Mr. Razak Obe, Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources. As political stakeholders weigh in, the announcement of the new deputy governor is anticipated in the coming days.
