Rivers State governor engages in closed-door discussions with president Tinubu amidst political tensions

In the intricate tapestry of Nigerian politics, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, held a discreet meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Arriving around 5.35 pm, Fubara departed over an hour later, leaving journalists in the dark about the agenda of the closed-door session.

When probed for details, Governor Fubara opted for brevity, revealing only that it was a “private visit.” This rendezvous transpired weeks after an earlier meeting where Governor Fubara and his estranged political godfather, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, were in the president’s company.

While the specific purpose of Fubara’s recent visit remains undisclosed, speculation looms over the political tensions between the governor and the FCT minister. The political drama escalated in December 2023, prompting Tinubu’s intervention.

On December 18, 2023, an eight-point resolution emerged from the meeting, where President Tinubu directed the withdrawal of all legal actions initiated by Governor Fubara and his team pertaining to the political crisis in Rivers State. Signatories to the resolution included Fubara, Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Ordu, FCT Minister Wike, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Rivers State Assembly Speaker Martin Amaewhule, PDP Chairman, Rivers State Aaron Chukwuemeka, and APC Chairman, Rivers State, Tony Okocha.

The directive from the President mandated Governor Fubara to re-present the 2024 Appropriation Bill, previously presented to a four-member state House of Assembly, to a full House. The opaque nature of Fubara’s recent visit raises questions about the lingering political tensions and the potential impact on the state’s governance dynamics.
