Delay in Session Start Aimed at Completing Crucial Renovation Work

Must read

The anticipated resumption of plenary sessions in the Nigerian Senate, initially slated for Tuesday, April 16, has been deferred to Tuesday, April 23, 2024. The postponement comes as a result of ongoing renovations to the main chambers of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, aimed at ensuring their preparedness for legislative proceedings.

The decision to delay the resumption was communicated to lawmakers via an internal memo from the Clerk to the Senate, Chinedu Akubueze, on Saturday. In the correspondence, senators were informed of the necessity to extend the hiatus to accommodate the completion of the renovation works.

The message addressed to the distinguished senators read, “Distinguished Senators are hereby invited to note that the resumption of the plenary sitting of the Senate, which was scheduled for Tuesday, April 17, 2024, has been postponed to Tuesday, April 23, 2024. This postponement is owing to unforeseen circumstances, and any inconvenience this may cause is highly regretted.”

While the postponement may inconvenience some, the Senate’s decision underscores the importance of ensuring that the chambers are fully refurbished and functional before resuming legislative activities. This delay reflects the Senate’s commitment to maintaining a conducive environment for effective lawmaking and deliberations.
