Simon Ekpa Faces May 2025 Court Date in Finland Over Terror Charges

Simon Ekpa, a Nigerian-Finnish agitator linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will potentially face charges in May 2025, Finnish authorities have confirmed. Ekpa, arrested alongside four others last week, is accused of terror-related activities, including incitement to violence and financing terrorism.

Finnish police allege that Ekpa, who styles himself as the Prime Minister of the self-proclaimed Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, used social media to incite violence in Nigeria’s South-East, leading to attacks on civilians and authorities. He remains in custody following a decision by the Päijät-Häme District Court, which cited probable cause for incitement with terrorist intent.

The case, which has drawn international attention, highlights the growing challenges posed by transnational actors in fueling instability. Finnish authorities have acknowledged the role of international cooperation in the investigation but declined to disclose details. Ekpa, a prominent voice in the separatist movement, previously made headlines for issuing “sit-at-home” orders and advocating a boycott of Nigeria’s 2023 elections, which led to violent enforcement and economic disruption in the region.

Economic losses linked to his activities have reportedly surpassed ₦4 trillion in two years. While Ekpa denies any wrongdoing, his arrest has been lauded by Nigerian officials, including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who called it a significant step in curbing violence in the South-East.

The Federal Government has vowed to monitor proceedings closely, viewing the case as a critical opportunity to address IPOB’s activities and mitigate the influence of external actors on Nigeria’s security.
