Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills to Ease Burden on Poor Nigerians, Says Lawmaker

President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills will relieve the financial strain on low-income Nigerians and small businesses if enacted, according to Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese.

Agbese made this assertion in Abuja on Saturday while urging citizens to support the reforms despite opposition from some state governors. The four executive bills, designed to overhaul Nigeria’s tax regime, have faced resistance, particularly from the 36 state governors, who have demanded broader consultation.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has been a vocal critic, calling on his northern colleagues to reject the proposals. Zulum argues the reforms, if implemented, could harm the region’s economy. However, Agbese maintained that the measures would foster equity and stimulate economic growth.

“These bills are not about sectional or individual interests but about the collective good of all Nigerians,” Agbese told reporters. “We hope to debate these bills on Tuesday and expect robust deliberations leading to their eventual passage. Many lawmakers who initially opposed the bills are now shifting their stance after studying their potential benefits.”

Agbese praised Tinubu’s leadership in championing a new approach to tax administration, describing the reforms as a step towards progressive taxation. “Under this system, the burden will shift away from the poor and small businesses, focusing instead on those better able to contribute. This is forward-thinking policy that will catalyse economic development and improve critical infrastructure,” he said.

The deputy spokesman emphasized that the reforms would benefit Nigerians across all sectors, from corporate executives to rural farmers. “Public policy impacts everyone, and these bills are designed to create a fairer, more efficient tax regime that supports national development,” he added.

Despite initial opposition, momentum appears to be building in favour of the reforms among lawmakers. Agbese expressed optimism that the House would rally behind the proposals when deliberations resume, underscoring their potential to reposition Nigeria’s economy for sustainable growth.

The bills are part of President Tinubu’s broader strategy to modernise Nigeria’s tax framework, reduce economic inequalities, and attract investment. However, achieving consensus among federal and state stakeholders remains a significant challenge.
