Zamfara APC Denies Wooing Governor Dauda Lawal To Defect To Ruling Party

The Zamfara State chapter of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied reports suggesting it is attempting to lure Governor Dauda Lawal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into its fold, describing the claims as “false, unpatriotic and fabricated.”

In a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, Alhaji Yusuf Idris, the party dismissed the reports as “a creation of mischief-makers,” insisting that no committee had been set up to facilitate Lawal’s defection.

“The Zamfara State chapter of the APC has never approached the PDP or its governor in any way to ask him to join the APC,” the statement read.

Idris accused Governor Lawal’s administration of poor performance and said the ruling party had no reason to seek his crossover. “The APC in Zamfara has never been impressed by the dismal and decimating performance of Governor Dauda Lawal,” he said. “This disappointing position is shared by the electorate and many politicians in the state, as demonstrated in the August 16, 2025 Kaura Namoda South bye-election, where the APC overwhelmingly defeated the ruling PDP.”

According to Idris, the PDP candidate in that contest and several of his supporters have since defected to the APC, which he said reflected the opposition’s waning influence across the state.

He also warned against the spread of misinformation by what he described as “unpopular online platforms,” insisting the party’s popularity stood on its record, not on fabricated reports.

“The APC does not require the patronage of lies to sustain its unprecedented popularity and support from the electorate,” he added, urging members of the public to rely solely on verified party communication channels.

The statement comes amid growing political tension in Zamfara, where both major parties have traded accusations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
