Biden Pardons Son Hunter, Citing ‘Miscarriage of Justice’

In a move that has reignited debates over the integrity of the US justice system, President Joe Biden issued a pardon for his son, Hunter Biden, on Sunday. The decision comes just weeks before Biden’s presidency concludes, handing over to President-elect Donald Trump.

Hunter Biden, convicted earlier this year of lying about his drug use when purchasing a firearm and pleading guilty in a separate tax evasion case, faced potential decades-long prison sentences. His father had repeatedly vowed not to interfere in his legal troubles but said the pardon was necessary to address what he described as a politically motivated prosecution.

“No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son — and that is wrong,” the president said in a statement. “I believe in the justice system, but raw politics infected this process, leading to a miscarriage of justice.”

Hunter Biden’s legal woes had been a consistent flashpoint for Republican criticism throughout his father’s presidency, with allegations that he received undue leniency. Prosecutors pursued charges even after Hunter repaid outstanding taxes and penalties and negotiated a plea deal that ultimately fell apart. His legal team argued that he was targeted because of his family ties, an assertion President Biden echoed in his remarks.

The pardon has drawn sharp rebuke from Republicans, who have long accused the Biden administration of shielding the president’s son. Former President Trump, who has himself faced legal challenges, denounced the move in a social media post, calling it “an abuse and miscarriage of justice” and contrasting it with his supporters imprisoned for their roles in the January 6 Capitol riot.

The controversy also comes against a backdrop of legal battles surrounding President-elect Trump. Criminal cases against him have largely stalled following a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity, effectively shielding Trump from serving time despite his conviction for falsifying business records earlier this year.

Presidential pardons for family members and close allies are not unprecedented. Bill Clinton famously pardoned his half-brother for a drug charge, and Trump pardoned his son-in-law’s father for financial crimes. However, Biden’s move has drawn exceptional scrutiny, given the broader questions it raises about the independence of the judicial system.

In a statement, Hunter Biden expressed gratitude for the pardon and reflected on his struggles with addiction. “I will devote the life I have rebuilt to helping those who are still sick and suffering,” he said.

President Biden’s decision follows his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, ceding the Democratic nomination to Vice President Kamala Harris. While his departure tempered Republican attacks on Hunter Biden during the election cycle, the pardon is likely to fuel ongoing partisan tensions as the US prepares for a new administration.
