Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has lauded Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his resilience amidst political antagonism, likening his current trials to the forging of a General in politics.
Speaking at the 1st Etche Festival of Food, Art, and Culture in Etche Local Government Area on Sunday, Jonathan urged the people of Rivers State to rally behind Fubara for the sake of peace and progress. The event, which also marked the 10th anniversary of the coronation of Eze Ken O. Nwala, featured the conferment of chieftaincy titles on both Fubara and Jonathan.
“You will pass through challenges,” Jonathan said, addressing Fubara. “Nobody becomes a General without fighting wars. Whatever you are going through now is preparing you for greatness, and with the support of the people of Rivers State, you will emerge stronger.”
Fubara, embroiled in a political crisis with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, has faced factionalism in the state’s House of Assembly and survived an impeachment attempt, amid incidents of violence.
Jonathan expressed concern about the broader implications of instability in Rivers State, warning of its potential impact on the Niger Delta and the national economy. “Rivers State is the centre of the Niger Delta. If there’s turmoil here, it reverberates across the region and affects the nation’s economy,” he noted.
He called for an end to the political conflict, urging stakeholders to allow Fubara to focus on governance. “In political office, we have tenures. Let those serving be allowed to complete their work. When their time ends, others will step in,” he said.
In his remarks, Governor Fubara expressed gratitude for Jonathan’s support during what he described as the “most difficult period” of his administration. He also pledged to prioritize the welfare of Rivers State residents through ongoing projects and social services.
“Having our father, Dr. Jonathan, here is a testament to his humility and belief in humanity,” Fubara said. “His presence today gives me strength and encouragement to continue in service to the people.”
The event also celebrated Etche’s role as the food basket of Rivers State, underscoring the community’s agricultural significance.
