The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has issued a resolute condemnation of purported plans for reprisal attacks on the Nigerian Army, disavowing any association with the inflammatory rhetoric attributed to Simon Ekpa, a factional leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Following the tragic loss of at least 15 military personnel during a communal clash in Bomadi and Okuoma communities, the INC swiftly moved to clarify its stance on escalating tensions in the region. In a statement penned by its National Publicity Secretary, Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha, the INC underscored its commitment to peace and unequivocally distanced itself from any actions advocated by Ekpa and IPOB.
“The INC has been appalled by recent statements circulating on social media attributed to Simon Ekpa, purporting plans for reprisal attacks on the Nigerian Army and the declaration of sit-at-home orders in Delta and Bayelsa states,” the statement read.
Expressing deep concern over the tragic loss of life and the escalation of violence, the INC emphasized its categorical rejection of any form of retaliatory action advocated by IPOB. The Congress condemned the attack on military personnel as “barbaric, sad, and unfortunate,” urging authorities to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The INC completely disassociates itself from the actions and planned action of IPOB,” the statement affirmed. “Such actions do not align with the interests or aspirations of the Ijaw nation.”
Amidst heightened tensions and concerns over potential reprisals, the INC called upon all Ijaw citizens to remain calm and vigilant, urging restraint and a commitment to peaceful dialogue as the most viable path forward.
