Rivers State Elders’ Council dismisses impeachment threat against governor, labels legislature illegitimate

Council challenges legitimacy of lawmakers, denounces impeachment rhetoric as mere bluster

The Rivers State Elders’ Council has issued a scathing rebuke against the renewed impeachment threats targeting Governor Siminalayi Fubara, dismissing the credibility of the state House of Assembly members aligned with former governor Nyesom Wike and labeling their actions as illegitimate.

Amid escalating tensions fueled by political maneuvering, the Council asserted that the 27 lawmakers, purportedly loyal to Wike, lack the constitutional mandate to initiate any impeachment proceedings, having forfeited their legitimacy by defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

High Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, a prominent member of the Rivers Elders’ Council, condemned the impeachment threats as mere posturing, highlighting the pending legal challenge before the Court of Appeal to contest the legitimacy of the pro-Wike lawmakers.

“While we are set to appear before the Court of Appeal on April 8, 2024, it becomes evident that the 27 lawmakers are operating from a position of illegitimacy,” Sara-Igbe declared. “Their actions amount to nothing more than empty rhetoric, as they lack the authority to dictate the political landscape.”

Sara-Igbe emphasized that the ongoing legal proceedings underscore the imperative of upholding the rule of law, cautioning against hasty and unilateral actions that undermine judicial processes.

“The governor cannot present any budget when we are in court,” Sara-Igbe clarified. “Thus, any demands made by the illegitimate lawmakers hold no legal weight and are subject to the final determination of the court.”

As the political landscape in Rivers State remains fraught with uncertainty, the Elders’ Council remains steadfast in its commitment to legal recourse, asserting the primacy of due process and the rule of law in navigating the complex dynamics of governance and legislative oversight.
