The University of Benin has taken decisive action by indefinitely suspending its Student Union Government following an incident allegedly involving some students and the Edo State Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata.

In a statement released on Monday by the university’s Registrar, Ademola Bobola, the institution detailed the rationale behind the suspension, citing an attack on Akpata believed to have been carried out by members of the student union.

The suspension, effective immediately from Monday, April 29, 2024, comes in the wake of an investigation into the events that transpired at the Faculty of Law and the University’s Senior Staff Club on Friday, April 12, 2024.

“The university management has received the report of the panel constituted to investigate the incidents,” the statement read. “After due consideration, the Vice Chancellor has approved the suspension of the university’s students’ union.”

As part of the suspension directives, all officers of the student union are mandated to hand over all union properties to the Dean of Students’ Affairs by 4pm on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. Meanwhile, a Caretaker Committee comprising representatives from various faculties, schools, and institutes has been established to oversee students’ activities during the period of suspension.

The announcement underscores the gravity of the situation and signals the university’s commitment to maintaining order and upholding the safety and well-being of its community
