Edo deputy governor serves summons to halt impeachment proceedings

Philip Shaibu Challenges Impeachment Move Amid Legal Battle

Must read

Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, escalated his fight against impeachment proceedings on Friday by serving Governor Godwin Obaseki and the House of Assembly with originating summons in a bid to halt the process.

Despite initial resistance from security personnel at the Government House, Shaibu managed to deliver the summons to Governor Obaseki via courier on Friday morning. Additionally, a bailiff successfully affixed the summons at the entrance of the state House of Assembly.

Earlier in the week, the Federal High Court in Abuja had declined Shaibu’s request to halt the impeachment proceedings initiated by the Edo State House of Assembly. Justice James Omotosho, while rejecting the plea, emphasized the necessity of serving the court papers to the governor and the assembly as required by law.

Consequently, Shaibu obtained approval to serve the court papers on Obaseki and the assembly through substituted means, paving the way for further legal action.

The impeachment proceedings against Shaibu, commenced on March 5, center on allegations of perjury and divulging government secrets, claims vehemently denied by the deputy governor.

Commenting on the developments, a source close to Shaibu expressed optimism that serving the originating summons would afford him the opportunity to contest the impeachment process effectively.

However, a Government House source refuted claims that the bailiff was obstructed from carrying out his duties, dismissing such assertions as baseless.

Meanwhile, Director General of the Philip Shaibu Campaign Organisations, Sunny Okomayin, urged Governor Obaseki and the House of Assembly to exercise restraint, highlighting the impending court hearing scheduled for April 15.

Okomayin called on the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party to intervene and restore order within the party in Edo State, expressing concerns over the conduct of the impeachment process.

Amidst legal maneuvers and political tensions, the fate of Philip Shaibu hangs in the balance, with the courts set to adjudicate on the legality and validity of the impeachment proceedings.
