Senator Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, has appealed to residents of Igbomotoru 1 and 2 communities in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area to return home, assuring them of their safety following a visit by a high-powered delegation led by the Commander of the Nigerian Army 16 Brigade, Oluremi Obolo.

During the visit, aimed at assessing the security situation in the area, Senator Diri reiterated his condemnation of the killing of 17 soldiers in Okuama, Delta State, on March 14. He urged the communities, particularly the youth, not to succumb to criminal activities and destabilization efforts.

Expressing concern over the spill-over effects of incidents occurring in neighboring states, Senator Diri cautioned against the resurgence of militancy in the region, emphasizing the need for intellectual engagement to propel the Ijaw nation forward.

In a bid to foster community stability, Senator Diri warned traditional rulers and leaders against absenteeism, emphasizing that non-resident monarchs risked dethronement.

Commending the Nigerian Army for their professionalism in handling the situation, Senator Diri extended gratitude for their support and cooperation.

He stated, “The era of militancy is over. It is time for intellectual engagement. Our youths should not be seen and used as cannon fodders. This is a warning to all those who offer themselves for nefarious activities to have a rethink.”

Senator Diri highlighted the government’s efforts in youth empowerment and community development, stressing the importance of productive engagement for societal progress.

The governor emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the soldiers’ killings to ensure accountability and justice.

As a gesture of support, Senator Diri announced the provision of relief materials, including cash, rice, and garri, to alleviate the communities’ hardships.

The visit concluded with a moment of silence in honor of the slain soldiers and deceased youths, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the imperative of restoring peace and stability in the affected areas.
